This 2,600 SF private residence is a spare rendition of
the forms and detailing of America's Shingle Style period, in particular the Lowe House,
designed by McKim, Meade, and White. (Rutherford Mead was raised in Brattleboro and designed
the Wells Fountain at the head of Main Street. The firm also designed the Canal Street School.)
The plan is layered so one passes from the entry (public area) to the
living spaces (private area) across a transverse hall that organizes the floor plan. The living spaces are
carefully crafted so that each room is defined within the open floor plan. Note the vaulted
ceiling that organizes the Living Room, and how the windows surrounding the Dining Room define that space.
